PROVENANCE

Original Owner Robert Selley (1916 – 1984)

    • Mr Selley arrived in South African in 1946 with his harp which was originally bought from a music store in South Kensington, London
    • He was appointed as the organist at St Mary’s Church, City organist and the Director of Music in Port Elizabeth.
    • During the 1950’s was appointed as the first permanent music teacher at Grey High
    • In 1961 he started the first Brass Band
    • In 1983 he retired from Grey High.

The harp was sold on in approx. 1960 for a young girl who wanted to play the harp and Mr Selley purchased another Erard Pedal Harp (whereabouts unknown).

This particular harp (no 5198) ended up in storage for more than 25 years in Port Elizabeth when the young girl eventually stopped playing. Her daughter did not play the harp and sadly did not sell the harp until 2021.
