Antique sideboards and servers for today’s homes

Categories: Articles, Blog, Style|Tags: , , , , , |

We’re hoping you’re here because you’ve discovered the beauty of including an antique sideboard in a modern living design brief and want to add one to your contemporary home. Once considered purely functional pieces for the dining room, we’re delighted that antique sideboards and servers are experiencing a well-deserved revival.

Originally crafted to store and serve tableware or food, antique sideboards are no longer confined to formal dining spaces. Instead, they’re making a bold comeback, reimagined and repurposed as statement décor pieces across every room in the contemporary home.

Why the renewed interest? In an age of mass production and minimalist trends, more homeowners and designers are turning to antiques for their inherent soul, substance, and story.

In a world obsessed with the new, these once-overlooked treasures are finally getting the attention they deserve, and it’s easy to see why.

Embracing historical charm

Antique sideboards and servers (also referred to as buffets) enter the furniture design space as storied artefacts that bring a unique sense of history into your home. Crafted with intricate details, they showcase fine craftsmanship and often evoke a sense of nostalgia.

More than mere traditional, historic curiosities, these pieces deserve their place in modern interiors.

  • Take a step back and look at an antique server with 21st-century eyes.
  • Take note of the rare blend of utility, craftsmanship, and timeless style that offers practical storage and visual character.
  • Take the opportunity to showcase the beautiful finishes and artisanal elements – rich wood grains, hand-carved details, and patinas developed over decades – that modern furniture simply cannot replicate.

Versatility in modern, minimalist spaces

At first glance, ornate antique furniture may seem at odds with the clean lines of minimalist design, but this very contrast creates design interest and depth.

In a sea of sleek, neutral lines and minimalist silhouettes, an intricately carved 19th-century George III Mahogany breakfront sideboard or a Victorian bleached wooden server becomes a necessary visual distraction.

Offering a beautiful juxtaposition to modern materials like glass, steel, and concrete, these pieces bring richness, texture, and character. Their timeworn elegance softens the starkness of minimalist interiors and adds a sense of warmth and personality.

From entryways and living rooms to bedrooms and home offices, antique sideboards and servers are being reimagined in creative, functional ways.

Their rise in popularity reflects a growing desire to live with intention; to fill our homes not just with furniture, but with stories, authenticity, and lasting beauty.

One of the most compelling reasons to integrate antique sideboards and servers into your décor is their remarkable versatility. They serve not only as functional storage solutions but also as statement pieces that tie a room together.

Tips for incorporating antique sideboards and servers

  • A focal point in dining spaces: In the dining room, antique sideboards serve their original purpose beautifully, as buffets for serving food or storing dinnerware, glassware, and table linens. Instead of being a background utilitarian piece of furniture, let an antique server shine as the hero against a neutral-toned wall to create a striking conversation piece in your dining area. Display blue and white china or Art Deco crystal decanters on its surface to highlight its historical significance.
  • A welcome surprise: An antique server in the entryway is both practical and elegant. Use a smaller sideboard to store everyday essentials while displaying a few carefully chosen décor items to set the tone for your home. A decorative mirror is the perfect complement in this setting.

One of the most compelling reasons to integrate antique sideboards and servers into your décor is their remarkable versatility.

  • A living room talking point: In minimalist living spaces, a sleek antique sideboard can serve as a sophisticated storage solution without overwhelming the space. Hide clutter and store books, board games, media and electronic equipment. Use the top surface to display artwork, sculptures, or a collection of coffee table books. The contrast between the antique wood and modern décor elements creates a layered, lived-in feel that’s visually rich and inviting.
  • A bedroom moment: Incorporate a compact sideboard into your bedroom to add a special touch. It can function as a stylish nightstand or a dressing table with added storage for linens or personal items, enhancing both aesthetics and functionality of the space. Topped with a vintage lamp, a framed photo, or a few well-loved books, it brings charm and individuality to the space and adds a bespoke, romantic touch.

The antique attraction | A unique repurposing narrative

Antiques possess a distinctive charm that contemporary pieces often strive to replicate. Each scratch, dent and aged patina on an antique item tell a story, adding depth and personality to your space. And then there’s the craftsmanship angle which positions these pieces as intriguing conversation starters. The superior materials and meticulous attention to detail, ensure antique items stand the test of time in terms of style and durability. They deserve to be showcased and used in modern homes.

Collectable and big-ticket items – such as antique servers, chests of drawers, linen presses, secretaires and bookcases – are entering contemporary spaces as welcome options for drinks cabinets and social gatherings.  They’re also the ideal backdrop or surface for showcasing your crystal glassware and decanters.

Linen presses & armoires | From traditional storage to legendary statement

Traditionally used to store linen and clothing, linen presses can be repurposed as stunning drinks cabinets (if you have the space). Their sturdy construction and ample shelving make them perfect for housing your favourite spirits, glassware and cocktail accessories.

To integrate a linen press seamlessly into a modern space, consider the following:

  • Contrast with contemporary elements: Pair your antique linen press with sleek, modern furniture. The juxtaposition will highlight the press’s unique features while maintaining a balanced aesthetic.
  • Bold backdrop: Place the linen press against a bold, contrasting wall colour or patterned wallpaper. This creates a striking focal point and draws attention to the antique piece.
  • Integrated lighting: Add interior lighting to the shelves of the linen press. This enhances the functionality and accentuates the beauty of the glassware and bottles stored inside. (An alternative is to use a well-positioned downlighter to highlight the area).

Bookcases | Literary elegance meets enlightened entertaining

Antique bookcases, with their intricate carvings and rich wood tones, can be transformed into sophisticated and elegant drinks cabinets.

Here’s how to make this transition work in a modern setting:

  • (Open) shelving display: Use the shelves to display an array of spirits, mixers, and glassware. Incorporate decorative items like vintage bar tools, cocktail recipe books, and small plants to create a visually appealing arrangement.
  • Mirrored back panels: Install mirrored panels at the back of the bookcase shelves. This not only adds a touch of modern glamour but also creates the illusion of more space, making the bookcase appear larger and more inviting.

Secretaires & servers | Sociable showpieces at your service

Imagine stepping into a modern living room, where sleek lines and minimalist decor reign supreme. Amidst this contemporary setting, an antique secretaire or sideboard server stands as a striking focal point, re-imagined as a chic bar cabinet. This inspired juxtaposition of old and new creates a welcome moment of eclectic harmony that just makes sense.

  • A secretaire –  with its myriad of drawers and hidden compartments – becomes a treasure trove for your finest spirits and cocktail accessories. Each drawer, once home to important documents and letters, now cradles delicate glassware and bar tools, ready to host an evening of entertainment.
  • Sideboard servers or buffets – originally designed to hold silverware and dining essentials, transform effortlessly into stylish drinks cabinets. Their broad surfaces offer ample space for displaying an array of bottles (on a silver tray), while the spacious cabinets below provide storage for mixers, garnishes, and everything needed to craft the perfect drink.

Tables | ‘Cheers’ to an obvious ‘mixer-&-match’ solution

Antique tables, be they dining, console or side tables, offer endless possibilities for creative repurposing. Turning a table into a drinks ‘cabinet’ will add an unexpected twist to your décor and socialising.

Here’s how to do it:

  • Glass-top conversion: Glass is the perfect medium to arrange a selection of your finest bottles and barware, creating an eye-catching display that doubles as a functional drinks station.

Antique sideboards, servers & buffets | The overlooked darlings of interior design

Categories: Articles, Blog, Style|Tags: , , , , |

Antique sideboards, servers or buffets – sometimes called credenzas – are perhaps the most overlooked and underestimated pieces of furniture. But we believe they deserve a moment of glory. (And who says they should only be relegated to the dining room?). Coming in many different shapes, sizes and finishes, this is definitely the time to break the rules and reposition a sideboard, buffet or server as the perfect decor investment in multiple rooms of your home.

We do, however, subscribe to William Morris’ one rule: “If you want a golden rule that will fit everything, this is it: Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.”

Ticking the two key interior design boxes of form and function – useful and beautiful – antique sideboards, servers  & buffets offer you the versatility to either be the hero piece or the sophisticated backdrop for practical storage and stunning displays. They are way more than just a utilitarian solution for traditional dining rooms; stepping up as striking feature pieces that will transform any space from mundane and boring to glorious and eclectic.

Mix antique servers, sideboards or buffets into modern spaces

Reaching their design peak during the Regency period, sideboards, servers and buffets are elegant, graceful and highly functional furniture forms.

What’s the difference?

When referring to this family of antiques, the terms are often used interchangeably. But there are subtle differences distinguishing them if you want to be specific and show off your antique knowledge. Generally speaking, to qualify as a sideboard, server or buffet, these elongated decorative furniture items will have cabinet-like doors and/or storage draws. (They are also narrower in width than dining or kitchen tables).

  • Sideboards are freestanding with short legs or their base sits directly on the floor.
  • Buffets have longer legs and are usually larger than a sideboard. Originally designed to serve food, their height is usually counter-level.
  • Servers are typically smaller and lighter in scale with narrow drawers, longer legs and an open bottom.
  • Credenzas originally didn’t have feet. But, their renewed popularity during the mid-20th century saw them being designed as long, low cabinets with sliding doors.

Where can they be placed?

The modern-day resurgence of antiques in decor trends has seen the evolution of repurposing furniture from its original design intent.

This is where antique sideboards, buffets or servers really come into their own. Originally only found in dining rooms, sideboards and servers are now making a name for themselves in every other room as drinks cabinets, kitchen islands, coffee stations, office storage, TV stands, dressing tables and bathroom vanities.

Place an antique sideboard or server in your modern space

We dare you to think out of the box when it comes to buying one of these antique pieces and allowing it to redefine your spaces.

How can they be used?

If you’re in search of a piece of furniture that does triple duty (i.e. has storage options, is perfect for displaying collections and looks beautiful), then, depending on the size of your space, an antique sideboard, buffet or server ‘steps up to the plate.’

  • Dramatic displays: With iconic drinks stations having a revival, and silver trays – with antique glass, silverware or candle collections – making a comeback, there isn’t a better piece of furniture to showcase in a modern home than a sideboard or server. (And if you’re not into gin and tonic, craft whisky or custom spirits, then a coffee station will look just as inviting). Also, given their countertop height, they remain the ideal item for ‘serving’ tea and food.
  • Stylish storage: The craftsmanship of antique sideboards, servers and buffets includes shallow drawers and/or cupboards; perfect for storing linens, serving plates, silverware and cutlery. (And that is just in the dining room). If you are brave enough to add a server or sideboard to your bathroom as a vanity, you can store towels and toiletries. In a bedroom, they make the perfect dressing tables and in a study, they provide a little extra ‘out is sight’ organization. Used as TV stands, their storage options hide a whole lot of living room paraphernalia.
